Gift to Village Learning Place
In the spirit of helping the neighborhood near the Homewood Campus, the Woman’s Club of the Johns Hopkins University supports the mission of the Village Learning Place (VLP) at 2521 St. Paul Street. Our first gift to this organization of $4,600 was made in 2017 in honor of long time member Esther Bonnet who was an inspiration to all for her many years of community service. She and other members of the Woman’s Club volunteered at the Barclay Elem/Middle School library for over twenty years which was the first organization that the club supported. The initial gift to VLP was used to support their LINK program (Let’s Invest In Neighborhood Kids) which helps children improve in math and reading. Additional donations have been used to add to their library catalog of books on equity, diversity and inclusivity and to support new program initiatives.
Our gift of $1252 in 2023 went to fund a children’s library seating area.
Scholarship
The Woman’s Club awards an annual scholarship of $1500 to a deserving Johns Hopkins University student. The scholarship is awarded to one of the university’s eight schools on a rotating basis. Thanks to the generosity of Madelyn Daniels, 1981-1983 club president, we are able to award an additional $500 over the next five years. The most recent awardee comes from the Carey School of Business and the following year the award will go to a deserving student from the School of Nursing.
Our funds in 2023 went to Kristen Corlay who is a gifted young engineering student from Mexico who spoke eloquently at our fall coffee.
